Addington Children's Hospital
Fly me away little Blue Plane
This was one of the most achingly beautiful but desolate places I've shot at so far.
The hospital was abandoned in 2006. It has been left to ruin, paint has peeled and hobos have moved in.
But there were still a few things left behind - the most sad was a tiny wheel chair, rusted and cracked, but obviously made for a child.
There was also a whole room filled with patient records stacked on the floor. I looked at a few of the files, and the average age of the patient was around 8 years old. It brought to home that this had been a place where children came when they were sick, and possibly died. Or maybe got better, and felt cared for.
On one of the days I had strayed from the other photographers and was shooting alone. An eerie silence hung over the building, but suddenly I heard children's voices and laughter. When I looked outside the windows to the streets, I saw no one around and certainly no children. It was a creepy feeling, but perhaps the children were watching over me.
The good news is that the Department of Health have decided to restore and renovate the hospital and to return it to its original purpose - a children's hospital. When that will be happening, no one knows. But for now there is hope...
